As a result, from the first page, the main character and her world pulled me in. The story isn’t new, but Durst’s heart and imagination make it feel fresh.

We follow Kiela, a librarian from the Great Library of Alyssium. She is forced to flee and hide on her childhood island home. This island becomes her safe place, filled with secret spellbooks and quiet danger.

I’ve read many books labeled as romantasy, and most disappointed me. Even the term itself makes me cringe a bit. However, when I picked up The Spellshop, I didn’t expect much. To my delight, I was surprised—it turned out to be a lovely read that broke my doubts and gave me hope for this genre again.

In this world, magic belongs only to the elite. Using it in secret is a crime punished by death. The side effects of forbidden magic cause storms and chaos. Sorcerers are sent to small islands to calm nature’s anger. After the revolts, the island of Caltrey loses its sorcerer. The land starts to die, while Kiela hides her magic, afraid someone will report her.

Nevertheless, the people of Caltrey are kind and welcoming. They form a warm and homely community. You’ll meet centaurs, mermaids, and unicorns, all adding charm to the story. My favorite characters were Caz, a talking plant with a sad past, and Meep, a funny nonbinary creature full of heart. Even a runaway chicken adds humor that keeps the tone light and cozy.

In addition, durst’s balance of magic, politics, and emotion reminded me of The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. Both books explore power and its impact on people. Yet The Spellshop stays soft and personal. It proves that small stories can be just as heroic as big ones.

Readers who love layered but gentle fantasy will enjoy how this book mixes calm adventure with quiet magic—similar to The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan, but more intimate and heartwarming.

Kiela’s personality makes her stand out—not loud, but kind and calm. Her hesitation around people feels relatable. When danger arrives, she shows quiet courage and proves she can lead.

For instance, her friendship with Caz, the witty spider plant, is funny and heartwarming. I also enjoyed the audiobook, read by Caitlin Davies, who gave each voice a playful charm. (Her “to Kiela” sometimes sounded like “tequila,” which made me laugh.)

Likewise, the townsfolk bring energy to the story. Bryn and Eadie are two chatty women who help Kiela open up. Larran, the sweet love interest, grows close to her slowly and naturally. As a result, the romance never feels forced or heavy. Instead, it shows two people learning to care for each other with patience and respect.

The Spellshop surprised me in the best way. The characters are warm, the world is full of flavor, and the setting feels alive. I could almost smell the jam and bread from Bryn’s bakery while reading.
